President Donald Trump is doubling down on his tariff approach.
The president announced on Saturday via a post on Truth Social that he will now implement a 15% “worldwide tariff.”
“I, as President of the United States of America, will be, effective immediately, raising the 10% Worldwide Tariff on Countries, many of which have been ‘ripping’ the U.S. off for decades without retribution (until I came along!), to the fully allowed, and legally tested, 15% level,” he wrote.
A 6-3 decision by the Supreme Court on Friday clarified that Trump did not possess the authority to apply his tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. This law gives the president the power to manage economic activity during times of crisis.
In a press conference after this ruling, Trump indicated he would rely on a different legal authority to impose a global 10% tariff on top of any existing duties.
The new authority, known as Section 122, has a limited duration of 150 days. Following this period, Congress must vote to extend the measure.
A White House official later confirmed that countries affected by the tariffs under the authority that the Supreme Court dismissed will now be subjected to the 10% tariff.
“With IEEPA no longer applicable, those countries will now be tariffed at the global 10% tariff using the Section 122 legal authority,” stated the official in a message to Business Insider. “This is, however, only temporary as the Administration will be pursuing other legal authorities to establish more appropriate or pre-negotiated tariff rates.”
Trump’s post on Truth Social, while lacking in specifics, hinted at a rise to a 15% tariff.
These tariffs justified under IEEPA have been one of Trump’s key tools in his mission to renegotiate trade agreements globally. They include the so-called “Liberation Day” tariffs, introduced in April, which apply at least 10% on nearly all countries worldwide.
“Over the next few months, the Trump Administration will assess and implement new tariffs that comply with legal standards, which will continue our successful process of making American interests a priority,” he wrote on Truth Social.
