Fashion often searches for unity, but some of its most compelling moments emerge from contrast. In Narrative Symbiosis: From the Edge of the Universe to the Origins of Civilization, designers Dian Jin and Runtan “Desmond” Du brought two distinctive creative worlds into conversation through a joint exhibition presented in New York last March.
The exhibition featured Jin’s collection Pale Blue Dot alongside Du’s Undefined Deity. Rather than dissolving their individual perspectives into a single visual language, the presentation allowed each collection to retain its identity while revealing the unexpected connections between them. The deity in Du’s collection remains deliberately undefined. It does not belong to one religion, tradition, or historical period. Jin begins at the edge of the universe, where Earth and humanity appear almost impossibly small. Du returns to the origins of civilization, where people developed myths, symbols, and divine figures to make sense of their existence. One collection examines humanity from beyond the world, while the other considers the systems of meaning created within it.
This relationship gives the exhibition its intellectual and emotional coherence. Both designers are concerned with how human beings define themselves when confronted by forces larger than the individual. For Jin, that force is the universe itself.
