Pacific Tides and Italian Leisure: Zegna Transports La Villeggiatura to the Malibu Coast

    Zegna

For the Summer 2027 season, Alessandro Sartori looked to the heart of Italian heritage, drawing inspiration from a cherished seasonal tradition. This concept centers on the era when families would transition their entire lives to the coast, embracing a slower, more intentional way of living during the warmest months.

The Nostalgic Spirit of ‘La Villeggiatura’

The collection, titled “La Villeggiatura,” goes beyond the typical idea of a vacation. As Sartori explained, it reflects a historical period—particularly between the 1950s and 1970s—when families didn’t just visit a destination; they moved their entire world there. This ritual involved packing up everything from the family dog to the extended family, renting villas for weeks at a time, and focusing on communal meals and shared relaxation. This sentiment of bringing one’s life with them is the cornerstone of the season’s aesthetic, mirroring Sartori’s own memories of annual trips to the seaside with a car packed to the brim.

A Cinematic Runway Experience on the Malibu Pier

To bring this vision to life, Zegna staged a striking presentation on the Malibu Pier. The setting merged Italian nostalgia with California’s coastal energy, featuring a backdrop of Pacific waves and local surfers. The atmosphere was curated with striped parasols and deck chairs in vibrant orange and yellow hues, while a high-profile audience—including actors Rami Malek, Mahershala Ali, and Gael García Bernal—enjoyed citrus-toned refreshments. The choice of Malibu highlights the brand’s global reach while grounding the collection in a universal appreciation for seaside elegance.

Strategic Client Engagement and Exclusive Experiences

Zegna utilized the Los Angeles event as a major touchpoint for its most dedicated clientele, following the success of similar activations in Milan and Dubai. Approximately 120 top clients were flown in for a multi-day immersive experience, which culminated in a private shopping event at the iconic Chateau Marmont. In the hotel’s cottages, guests were given the opportunity to order runway looks immediately and explore made-to-measure options. To further elevate the offering, the brand introduced exclusive pieces crafted from the world’s most luxurious fibers, including vicuña, 12-micron wool, and ultra-fine cashmere.

Refined Silhouettes and a Mediterranean Palette

The Summer 2027 wardrobe emphasizes effortless sophistication, offering richness without the burden of weight. Sartori’s designs focus on soft tailoring and relaxed proportions that feel appropriate for both a coastal retreat and a refined city environment. Key pieces include belted safari jackets, cropped jackets with dropped shoulders, and supple leather bombers. The collection also features matching striped separates and a variety of shirt-jackets, paired with oversized striped totes, soft loafers, and leather slippers. The color story is deeply rooted in the Mediterranean landscape, blending ocean blues and lush greens with warm terracotta, sandy neutrals, and deep chocolate browns.

Innovation in Textiles and Woven Leather Techniques

A significant portion of the collection’s soul lies in its material innovation. Sartori collaborated with Tessitura Ubertino, a weaving mill within the Zegna group, to utilize restored vintage jacquard looms from the mid-century. These machines have been modernized to produce intricate textures using blends of silk, cotton, and even paper. One of the season’s most technical achievements is a new woven-leather process that took over a year to perfect. By transforming strips of nappa and suede into a pliable yarn, the brand created a “leather knitwear” that offers the luxurious feel of hide with the breathability and lightness of a sweater.

A Harmonious Blend of Tradition and Modernity

By marrying historical Italian customs with cutting-edge textile technology, Zegna has created a Summer 2027 collection that feels both deeply personal and globally relevant. The focus on “La Villeggiatura” serves as a reminder of the importance of slowing down and surrounding oneself with the comforts of home, even when far away. Through its blend of high-tech leather weaving and classic linen and silk fabrics, the collection provides a versatile wardrobe for the modern traveler who values craftsmanship and comfort in equal measure.
